The Cabinet has decided to expedite the development programmes planned for Upper North Province.

 
After reflecting on the obstacles in implementing certain projects, discussed in the working session of today’s Cabinet meeting, the Cabinet decided to commence the projects that could be easily implemented as soon as possible.
 
Members also agreed that the Upper North Province Office and line ministry to collaborate to resolve the obstacles in executing certain projects.
 
Development programmes planned for Upper North Province include programmes approved by the National Planning Council, projects in the Public Sector Investment Programme, and projects carried out by public-private partnerships.
 
These programmes include improving education and health services in some islands in the province, construction of water and sewerage systems, harbours, and other infrastructure development projects, building drug detoxification centers and housing projects.
 
At today’s meeting, the Cabinet also decided to inaugurate the Maldives National University on 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal (15 February), Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) Birthday.
 
Rabi’ al-Awwal 12, in addition to being the Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday, also the 61st anniversary of the ‘Dhaaru-al-Uloom’, one of the most significant buildings in the academic history of the country.
 
Noting that that the inauguration of the Maldives National University would be an important milestone in the history of the nation, members of the Cabinet agreed that it was most fitting to look back at the academic history of the nation.
 
Today’s meeting held in Kulhudhuffushi is the first meeting of the Cabinet to be held out of Malé.
 

Responding to a question from a local reporter after today’s meeting, President Mohamed Nasheed expressed the government’s delight in holding a Cabinet meeting out of Malé for the first time.
