On the second day of his tour of Raa Atoll, President Mohamed Nasheed first visited Maduvvari this morning. He was given a warm welcome by the supporters of both ruling MDP and the main opposition DRP when he arrived in the island.
Addressing the people of the island, President Nasheed noted that Maduvvari was one of the most severely affected islands by beach erosion. He stated that it was clear from the extent of severity of beach erosion in some islands that the matter required immediate government attention.
On the issue, he said the government’s intention was to use modern technologies to protect shorelines of the severely affected islands, and the government’s aim was to preserve these islands to the next generations in habitable conditions.
During the visit to Maduvvari, the President inspected the work that was done to protect the island from beach erosion.
Meeting the people, the President also revealed that Maduvvari Health Centre was selected for installation of telemedicine services, and the centre would be connected to all major hospitals within the year via telemedicine technology.
After concluding the visit to Maduvvari, the President visited Meedhoo of Raa Atoll this morning.
In his address to the people of Meedhoo, the President noted that construction of the island’s harbour was completed last year. But, he said, constructing a harbour was not enough to gain any economic benefit from a harbour.
Referring to the government’s policy to develop harbours as commercial zones, the President said the government intends to develop facilities in the Meedhoo harbour to foster trade between the islands of the region.
In both islands, the President highlighted the progress the government has made during the past two years in delivering its electoral pledges.
