Cabinet members, at today’s Cabinet meeting, have condemned the stabbing today of Ms Aishath Velezinee, Presidential Member of the Judicial Service Commission.

Ms Velezinee was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) this morning after she was stabbed in the back with a sharp object.

Criticizing the attack on Ms Velezinee, members of the Cabinet called for a full investigation of the attack and to bring those behind the attack to justice.

They also highlighted the importance of a special operation by police to make Male’ safer for everyone.

President Mohamed Nasheed visited Ms Velezinee at IGMH this morning while she was being treated after the attack.

Speaking at the Cabinet meeting, the President condemned the attack on Ms Velezinee. He said the government did not condone such attacks and it would take necessary measures to ensure such incidents did not occur.

At today’s meeting, members of the Cabinet also discussed the implementation of the national budget for 2011 passed by the People’s Majlis and formed a cabinet committee to provide information on implementation of budget programmes.
