Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that independence for Maldives was gained through much sacrifice of many Maldivians. He made this statement while speaking at the opening ceremony of Hoarafushi Children’s Park. He added that we need to work to sustain this independence.
Stating that the threat of terrorism was high across the world, Dr Waheed said November 3rd 1988 was a dark day in modern history of the Maldives.
He said that the democratic changes that we now see in the Maldives were crucial. He also said that in the past the people were not consulted in governance and were not politically and economically empowered.
