President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that children with thalassaemia have equitable access to all the rights and opportunities afforded by the nation, emphasising the need for these to be fully accessible.

In a message commemorating World Thalassaemia Day, he called on everyone to demonstrate this principle through both words and actions.

Emphasising the gravity of the issue, the President noted that the Maldives has one of the highest rates of thalassaemia in the world relative to its population. He stressed the importance of enhancing public awareness and expanding access to treatment across the country. He also underscored the duty of relevant authorities to prioritise the health and consistent care of children living with the condition.

President Dr Muizzu reiterated the Government’s dedication to delivering the pledges made during the 2023 Presidential Election concerning the care and support of children with thalassaemia. He stated that the Administration would take tangible action to address long-standing issues that have been neglected, with the aim of bringing meaningful relief and improved well-being to affected children and their families.

In conclusion, the President urged the public to donate blood, highlighting the spiritual fulfilment and blessings associated with the act. He also called on all Maldivians to stand in solidarity and extend compassion to every child confronting the challenges of thalassaemia.

In addition to his message, the President marked the occasion with a social media post. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that children with thalassaemia are granted equal access to opportunities in Maldivian society, free from discrimination. Fulfilling their aspirations for a joyful and fulfilling life, he said, would represent a significant step forward for the nation as a whole.
