His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the President of the Republic of Maldives, and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed hosted a State Luncheon in honour of The Honourable Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, during his State Visit to the country.
Both leaders addressed the gathering, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two nations and looking forward to an even more ambitious future.
Reflecting on these ties, President Dr Muizzu noted that bilateral friendship goes beyond diplomatic dates, built over generations through shared education, human connections, and the many Maldivians who have called Malaysia a second home.
In this regard, the President expressed sincere appreciation for Malaysia's support in incorporating the Maldives into the Graduate Pass Scheme, broadening access to higher education scholarships, and facilitating visas, particularly for families with children who have special needs.
Outlining areas for expanded collaboration to shape the decades ahead, the President underscored the vast potential in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital transformation, cybersecurity, health and human development, tourism, trade and investment, and the enormous potential of the blue economy.
He also expressed gratitude for the decision of the Government of Malaysia to extend a currency swap facility of USD 100 million through the central banks, and welcomed the Malaysian government's agreement in principle to commence negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement.
Additionally, the President welcomed collaboration with Petronas for potential exploration of minerals and naturally resources of the Maldives. He acknowledged the consideration of land allocation for the Chancery of High Commission of the Maldives in Putrajaya on a reciprocity basis.
Delivering his remarks, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed with utmost sincerity that Malaysia views the Maldives as a nation steadfast in its principles and values, with a passionate commitment to defending what is right. He affirmed his full trust in President Dr Muizzu’s leadership, dedication, and vision to transform a country with such immense potential.
Referring to the currency swap, the Prime Minister noted the importance of the partnership with the Maldives.
The luncheon was attended by senior dignitaries of the visiting delegation, senior officials from the Government of the Maldives and other State Dignitaries and the Diplomatic Corps.
