President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the power to steer the Maldives towards a brighter horizon and guide the nation forward rests fundamentally with its students.
He made the remarks while meeting with students from HA. Utheemu, as part of the official visit by the President and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed to join in this year's National Day celebrations.
Speaking at the meeting, the President emphasised that the Administration's core policy is grounded in listening to the voices of youth and all citizens to advance national progress. Noting that the views of students are invaluable, he assured that he would give serious consideration to the ideas and perspectives they shared, and expressed his hope for more frequent opportunities to engage directly with them.
During the interaction, the students raised several concerns, including the lack of adequate recreational space within the school, noting that they are currently compelled to play in dusty outdoor areas in their uniforms. They requested the development of a turfed play area, mentioning that the Island Council has already allocated suitable land for this purpose.
The students also called for expanded opportunities under the National Service Programme and highlighted the challenges of conducting indoor activities due to the absence of a multipurpose hall. They expressed their sincere gratitude to the President and the Government for air-conditioning Utheemu School under the Cool School project, noting the comfort it has brought to their learning environment.
Highlighting the success of the National Service Programme, the President described it as a high-demand initiative open to young people across the country. He noted that while current institutional capacity accommodates the training of approximately 1,000 youths annually, each intake receives twice as many applicants as available slots. Addressing the infrastructure request, he assured that although a multipurpose hall is not budgeted at present, the Government will facilitate the development of the facility.
Throughout the meeting, the President listened attentively to the students' questions, aspirations, and concerns. Reaffirming the Administration's commitment to youth empowerment, he gave his assurance that the Government will work through relevant State mechanisms to address their needs and extend the necessary support.
