Government's policy on advancing labour and protecting workers' rights is comprehensive and equitable: President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Government's approach to advancing labour and protecting the rights of both local and expatriate workers across various sectors of the Maldives is comprehensive and equitable.

He made these remarks in his address marking International Workers' Day.

The President highlighted the special attention given to teaching trades and skills to school students, with the country's first vocational high school now established. Programmes have been launched to train people in fields critical to national development, and Government grants and concessional loans to support skills development have been expanded. He also noted that the Government's work with major e-commerce platforms, to help Maldivian products reach the global market, has begun to yield results.

The President said the Government has taken firm and unprecedented measures to regulate expatriate workers in the Maldives. He noted that jobs and trades reserved exclusively for Maldivians are being identified and enforced.

The President further noted that special efforts are being made to open up employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. In line with his Presidential pledge, he said those who wish to continue working beyond the age of 65 now have that opportunity. He added that this Government has met with and listened to workers more extensively than any other, and that longstanding issues faced by workers across various levels are now being resolved.

The President noted that the Maldivian civilisation built by our forefathers stands as a testament to industry, skill, and diligence. He said that, in a changing and globalising world, ensuring Maldivians remain a productive, industrious people with a strong economy is a vital pillar in safeguarding the nation's independence and sovereignty.

The President concluded his address by calling on all Maldivian citizens to extend their cooperation in the Government's efforts to broaden employment opportunities, and urged every able and capable Maldivian to step into the field of action.
