Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has underscored the importance of building strong and independent parliaments, particularly in small jurisdictions, noting that confidence, clear purpose and institutional independence are essential for effective parliamentary function and for maintaining public trust.
He made the remarks at the opening of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's (CPA) Small Branches Workshop - Capacity Building Workshop: Strong and Independent Parliaments in Small Jurisdictions, held in Malé.
The Vice President noted that the workshop marks the first time the Maldives is hosting a CPA Small Branches capacity-building programme, reflecting the country's growing engagement with the CPA and its commitment to strengthening parliamentary institutions. He emphasised that platforms such as the CPA Small Branches Network play a vital role in enabling knowledge-sharing, peer learning and practical cooperation among smaller legislatures facing similar challenges.
He further stated that the Maldives places strong importance on its partnership with the Commonwealth and remains committed to enhancing accountability, strengthening democratic institutions and advancing parliamentary development.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim. The workshop, held from 27 to 29 April 2026, is jointly organised by the CPA and the People's Majlis of the Maldives, and brings together parliamentary delegates from various Commonwealth countries for three days of expert-led presentations, peer-to-peer learning and hands-on exercises.
