President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today that 1,875 development projects are currently under way across the Maldives, encompassing all Government ministries. He made the statement at a ceremony held at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE) to mark the second anniversary of the Administration, under the theme “Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104.”
In his address, the President emphasised that infrastructure development remains the Administration’s foremost priority. He noted that the 1,875 projects comprise both ongoing initiatives and newly formalised agreements, affirming that physical works for the latter will commence within three months. This total includes 236 projects formalised this month under the Private Sector Partnership. The President stressed that the benefits of these nationwide infrastructure initiatives will be directly experienced by the public upon completion.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated that all development will be carried out in full compliance with environmental safeguards. He reaffirmed that every project is being implemented in accordance with the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures. Highlighting one of his key pledges – the national Five Million Tree Programme – he noted that over 800,000 trees have been planted to date, with the figure expected to surpass six million.
The President further stated that renewable energy expansion is central to reducing reliance on fuel. He highlighted that national solar energy production capacity has doubled, work on a major 100-megawatt project has commenced, and a further 78 solar initiatives have been contracted. Through these measures, he reiterated the Administration’s commitment to generating 33 per cent of the country’s energy needs from renewable sources.
He announced that the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) service will be established in all atolls by the end of March to strengthen the transport network. He added that the ‘Taxi Line’ service in Malé will be launched in February as part of efforts to ensure a reliable and efficient transport system. He assured the public that taxi drivers will continue to receive a stable income under the new structure, while the community benefits from improved and uninterrupted service.
