President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged the prompt resolution of cases awaiting court hearings, emphasising that no individual should remain in prolonged pre-trial detention. He expressed full confidence that the judiciary will carry out its duties impartially and justly.
The President made the remarks during his address at the official ceremony commemorating Republic Day.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted that resolving issues related to prolonged pre-trial detention was a key electoral commitment and noted that the Government has already taken the necessary steps in this regard. He explained that this constitutes a principal reason for allocating resources to the judiciary within the broader State budget, alongside addressing space constraints within the court system.
The President affirmed that, if any amendments are required within the legal framework, the Government is prepared to provide its full support. He further reiterated the Administration’s commitment to upholding good governance through the continued strengthening of checks and balances across the judicial and legislative systems.
Reflecting on 57 years of the republic, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the enduring importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights. He reaffirmed the Administration’s dedication to advancing responsible, fair, and just policies, stressing that the pursuit of justice will be realised in its fullest and most exemplary form.
