President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that the Government’s policy is to elevate the Hithadhoo Health Centre into a hospital-level facility. The announcement was made during his meeting with residents of Hithadhoo, as part of his ongoing visit to the inhabited islands of Hadhdhunmathi.

Highlighting the new extension to the Hithadhoo Health Centre, the President described the commencement of the project as a positive step towards upgrading the facility to hospital standards. He added that the Administration will prioritise the overall development of human resources within the health sector next year, with a strong focus on infrastructure investment, ultimately enabling extended service hours at health centres.

Addressing his pledge to develop a second airport in Laamu Atoll, the President stated that while a final decision has not yet been made, efforts are ongoing to identify the most economically and geographically viable location. He assured residents that the project remains a Government priority and that a decision will be announced in due course.

As part of the President’s visit, several development initiatives were launched in Hithadhoo. These included the introduction of Bank of Maldives (BML) ATM services and the commencement of physical work for the new BML branch in Laamu Hithadhoo, the Hithadhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre, the Hithadhoo Police Station, and a volleyball court. The Hithadhoo–Kunahandhoo Causeway Project also commenced today.

Additionally, agreements were signed for the development of a football stadium, the upgrading of island roads, and the development of an ice plant. The President revealed that the BML Hithadhoo branch is scheduled for completion by March next year and that work on the multipurpose hall at Hithadhoo School will commence later this year.
