President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that a campus of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) is essential for an island like Maamigili, which serves as a model for population management and development consolidation. He made the statement while addressing residents of Maamigili during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of South Ariatholhu.

The President witnessed the signing of an agreement to establish the IUM Maamigili Campus at the meeting. The establishment of the IUM campus in Maamigili is a Presidential pledge.

Addressing additional educational initiatives, the President stated that the school upgradation project is expected to be completed by the 2026 academic year.

He also provided an overview of ongoing initiatives and projects planned for 2026, highlighting that work will commence on the development of a 30-bed hospital, the Bank of Maldives Maamigili Branch, and a road development project during this visit.

Acknowledging Maamigili’s role as a development hub, the President announced that ID card and passport issuance services are scheduled to commence on the island before the end of October. He added that oversight of waste management has been assigned to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), with services set to commence this year. The President further announced the establishment of a public works unit on the island and outlined plans to enhance employment opportunities. He confirmed that a housing project will be carried out on the island, with the development of a sports complex earmarked for Maamigili under the 2026 State budget.

In conclusion, the President reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development and progress of Maamigili.
