President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the Government’s plan to inaugurate Guraidhoo Airport on Independence Day 2027. He made this announcement while addressing the residents of Kolhumadulu Guraidhoo as part of his ongoing tour of four atolls.
The President described the airport as a critical gateway for both the island and the region, affirming that all development works will be completed and the airport made operational within 22 months, commencing tomorrow.
Underscoring the importance of decentralised public services in conjunction with airport development, the President confirmed that national identity card and passport issuance services will begin in Guraidhoo this November.
With respect to housing, the President announced that the Bank of Maldives home loan scheme which provides financing of up to MVR 30 million without collateral, will shortly be expanded nationwide. He further confirmed that 100 additional housing units will be developed in Guraidhoo next year, with the option of construction on individual residents’ plots.
The President also outlined additional projects for the island, including the reclamation of seven hectares of land, which will be carried out as part of the reclamation project at the neighbouring island of Gaadhiffushi. He added that harbour expansion and development works will be incorporated into the 2026 state budget. The stalled school project, he confirmed, will be resumed and completed ahead of the new academic year. In addition, the construction of a modern children’s park will commence before the end of this year.
