President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration's commitment to ending the hardship of citizens having to travel long distances at great expense to access essential services, and has committed to bringing convenience closer to the people.
He made these remarks while addressing the community of Th. Veymandoo, during his tour of the inhabited islands of Kolhumadulu Atoll. The meeting was held at Veymandoo School, where he highlighted the Government's development policies and progress on ongoing infrastructural projects.
During the ceremony, three key projects were signed for Veymandoo development, including the harbour upgrade, land reclamation, and road development to modern standards. Expressing confidence that these projects would bring significant progress to the island, the President assured attendees that work would continue without interruption until completion.
He also underscored the importance of the RTL ferry service launched today, noting that it is vital for Kolhumadulu Atoll and represents a major step in ensuring connectivity across the Maldives. The Government, he added, is delivering on its pledge to bring Kolhumadulu onto the national development radar, with more improvements to the RTL network planned.
Highlighting efforts to strengthen the atoll's economy, the President emphasised the Government's concessions to local operators, ensuring that the benefits of the tourism sector are shared with the residents of Kolhumadulu.
The President also announced major investments in the island's education sector. He assured attendees that the long-delayed multipurpose hall and school building will be completed by the start of the 2026 academic year, and confirmed that an Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Learning Centre will be developed in Veymandoo.
He also revealed that a FIFA-standard football pitch will be developed, whilst a modern sports complex will be included in the 2026 Budget, with work commencing early that year. Plans for a dedicated children's park were also announced.
On healthcare, he reiterated that immediate improvements will be implemented even before the new 50-bed hospital opens.
Additionally, passport issuance services were launched in Veymandoo – another step in bringing essential Government services closer to citizens.
