President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured the residents of M. Kolhufushi that the island’s development is a priority for his Administration, pledging new opportunities and initiatives to drive progress. He made the remarks during his visit to Kolhufushi, as part of his ongoing tour of the Atoll.
The President stated that additional services required to make the housing unit initiative operational would be completed within this year.
He further announced that a 100-housing unit project would be initiated under the 2026 budget, with provisions for individuals wishing to build housing units on their own plots of land. The President also highlighted that housing units developed under his Administration would be offered at a lower lease rate.
The President went on to reveal that a timely solution would be introduced to address the island’s electricity issues. He also noted that a new school building, complete with a health room, library and other facilities, would be included in next year’s budget.
During the discussions, residents voiced concerns over stalled resort projects, the state of the harbour and the lack of sporting facilities. They also highlighted challenges in pursuing higher education on the island and difficulties in accessing medical treatment both locally and on neighbouring islands.
The President assured residents that their concerns would be taken into account and provided updates on ongoing development projects. He confirmed that the 2026 budget would include the construction of a football stadium and a handball court. He added that solutions to challenges in pursuing higher education were already in progress and would be shared in due course.
The President further announced that Raajje Transport Link (RTL) services would be introduced in the Atoll next year. He assured residents that the Administration would seek ways to expedite stalled resort projects in the Atoll, while also advancing improvements in the health sector.
