President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to safeguarding the public interest, stressing that no policy will be introduced that compromises this principle. He made the remarks while addressing residents of Felidheatholhu Rakeedhoo, during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands across four atolls.
The meeting, held on Saturday morning at the island’s harbour, was attended by members of the Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and local residents. Participants briefed the President on the most urgent priorities affecting the community.
A key concern raised was the residents’ desire to relocate to another island. In response, the President explained that such a decision would require broad public consultation, in line with the Administration’s population consolidation policy. He stressed that relocation would only proceed if supported by at least 80 per cent of the population, ensuring that the outcome reflects a clear community consensus.
The President also noted that Rakeedhoo’s thriving local tourism sector would be taken into account when considering any relocation or decentralisation measures.
As part of his visit, President Dr Muizzu inaugurated the Bank of Maldives’ ATM service on the island. With the introduction of BML’s ATM service to Rakeedhoo, all inhabited islands in Felidheatholhu now enjoy improved financial accessibility in line with the President’s pledge to expand banking services across the nation.
