He made the statement in a message issued to commemorate the International Day of Democracy.

In his message, the President stated that the Maldives stands as proof that democracy can thrive even in the smallest of nations, noting the country’s active role in advancing rights and freedoms. He added that the Maldives’ democratic journey has been shaped by resilience, unity, and the will of the people.

President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ collective commitment to ensuring that the voices and aspirations of the people are heard, respected, and valued in all aspects of governance. He emphasised that his Administration will champion diversity within the democratic process by ensuring greater representation of women and youth in shaping the nation’s shared future.

The President reiterated his dedication to achieving this goal, underscoring that the Maldives stands in solidarity with all those fighting for their rightful place in the world, particularly the people of Palestine. He stressed that the ongoing genocidal acts against Palestinians serve as a stark reminder of the struggles faced by those whose sovereignty is under threat, and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to the principles that underpin a stronger and more inclusive democracy for present and future generations.
He also shared his message on his official X account, on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy.

The International Day of Democracy was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 and was officially observed for the first time on 15 September the following year. The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997, which affirms the principles and values of democracy. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of democratic governance and encourages citizens to actively participate in political processes.
