President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to establish a branch of the Centre for the Holy Quran in HDh. Vaikaradhoo early next year. He made the announcement while addressing residents of the island during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of South Thiladhunmathi.

The President noted that the Island Council had also requested the initiative, and highlighted Vaikaradhoo’s tradition of producing skilled Qari’s and its community’s deep connection to the Holy Quran.

At today’s ceremony, an agreement was signed with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to upgrade the island’s harbour. Once completed, the project will resolve long-standing issues with the harbour and include a dedicated beach area for the community.

The President highlighted that construction of a 12-classroom facility on the island had been stalled for many years. He pledged to complete the project within this year, ensuring the classrooms are ready for use by the next academic year.

Additionally, President Dr Muizzu acknowledged that the Vaikaradhoo powerhouse requires relocation and confirmed that this would be carried out within the year.

He also underscored the importance of supporting the island’s growing agriculture sector, noting that the current cargo ferry network routes restrict its progress. To address this, he pledged to revise the ferry route, making Vaikaradhoo a departure point.

The President concluded by assuring residents that the island’s core development needs would be prioritised, with initiatives to be included in next year’s national budget.
