President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended heartfelt greetings to the people of the Maldives on National Day, reaffirming his steadfast belief that Maldivians will continue to uphold the values of independence and nationhood.

In a message shared via his official X account, the President paid tribute to the valiant legacy of al-Sultan al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A’uzam, whose resolute efforts secured the nation’s sovereignty 466 years ago. He remarked that the heroic struggle of Boduthakurufaanu remains deeply etched in the hearts of Maldivians, serving as a timeless source of inspiration and national pride.

The President called upon all citizens to draw guidance from the patriots who laid down their lives in defence of the nation, emphasising the enduring spirit of unity and resilience that defines the Maldivian identity.

National Day commemorates the heroic efforts of al-Sultan al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A’uzam, and this year the official celebrations are being held in Utheemu, his birthplace. The President and the First Lady departed for Utheemu after attending the flag-hoisting ceremony at Republic Square this morning.

Every year, the first day of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal is commemorated as National Day to remember the liberation of the Maldivian nation from Portuguese colonialism and to honour the memory of the jihad that Maldivians waged for independence.
