President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to hand over Maamaduvvaree to Hithaadhoo. He made the announcement while speaking to residents of Hithaadhoo during his ongoing tour of Baa Atoll’s inhabited islands.
The President noted that Maamaduvvaree holds historical significance for the people of Hithaadhoo, who have long had substantial economic interests in the island. The island, however, has been under a long-term tourism lease, and development has not progressed as stipulated. He stated that the agreement would be resolved in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements, after which the island would be handed over to Hithaadhoo.
During the visit, agreements were signed in Hithaadhoo for the construction of a multipurpose hall for the island’s school and a land reclamation project. The President emphasised that, once completed, these initiatives would bring substantial benefits to residents and assured that the completion of the school hall would be accompanied by other necessary facilities to fully support the school.
Referring to the presidential pledges for Hithaadhoo’s development, he outlined ongoing work in various areas and stated that practical work on fulfilling four key pledges will commence this year.
Focusing on health and wellness, President Dr Muizzu stated that the agreement for building a new Health Centre has been signed. Upon completion, the Health Centre will have expanded space, improved facilities, and provide laboratory and dialysis services.
In the area of sports and recreation, the President confirmed that work will begin this year on a full-size football pitch, a volleyball court, a Fitness and Recreation Centre, and an outdoor gym.
The visit also saw President Dr Muizzu officially inaugurate the Bank of Maldives ATM service in Hithaadhoo.
