President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured the residents of Gaafu Alif Maamendhoo that the sewerage issue on the island will be resolved swiftly, with work progressing at an accelerated pace.
The President made this assurance during his visit to Maamendhoo as part of a tour of several islands in Huvadhoo Atoll. In his address, he stated that road construction work on the island would commence immediately after the completion of the sewerage project. Highlighting the island council's current proposal for addressing the issue, he added that the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure will collaborate with the council in the coming days to establish a temporary solution using the materials readily available at the council until a permanent solution is implemented.
The President highlighted sanitation, roads, and the erosion as key issues that have persisted for a prolonged period, significantly affecting the lives of Maamendhoo residents. He reassured the community that these matters would be addressed with the utmost care and prioritised in future discussions.
In his remarks, President Dr Muizzu underscored that resolving the housing issue will be a priority in this year’s budget, followed by improvements in the education and health sectors. He announced plans to upgrade the health centre to enable round-the-clock service and initiate the construction of a multipurpose hall at the local school within the year. He also emphasised the importance of addressing the needs of the island's youth, highlighting plans to restart and complete the volleyball court project, renovate the futsal ground, and lay turf on the football field this year.
Addressing the development of Maamendhoo harbour, the President expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved since his tenure as a minister but acknowledged the need for further enhancement. He explained that a technically sound solution would be devised to optimise the Harbour’s usability by increasing its operational space. Additionally, he pledged that the Government would support residents in overcoming financial and resource constraints to improve solid waste management on the island.
