President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment to the Copyright and Related Rights Act, following its passage by the Parliament during the 56th sitting of the 20th Majlis on Monday, December 2, 2024.

The amendment aims to further clarify the materials eligible for copyright protection, as well as outline exemptions for individuals with disabilities and non-commercial uses. Notably, the protection period for copyright has been extended from 50 years to 70 years.

The amendment seeks to address some of the limitations of the previous legislation, ensuring broader coverage for a variety of works, including literature, art, performances, voice recordings, and broadcasts. Once the amendment is enforced, these works will be protected regardless of their presentation, purpose, or quality.

In cases of copyright infringement or perceived infringement, copyright holders will now have the right to pursue legal action in the relevant courts.

Following the President’s ratification, the amendment has been published in the Government Gazette and will come into effect three months from the date of publication.
