President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will submit amendments to the law in the upcoming week to address existing challenges to save the nation from the illegal narcotics addiction. The President made the announcement on his official X account.

In his post, the President highlighted that one of the biggest challenges faced by state agencies in tackling this addiction is the deficiencies within the current law. He stated that the government will introduce amendments to the Drugs Act of the Maldives to Parliament within the week after reviewing it in consultation with relevant state agencies to remove barriers in the investigation and prosecution of drug cases.

The President also emphasised that the Government will introduce a new gang-related crime prevention bill to replace the existing Prohibition on Gang Violence Act, aiming to safeguard the nation from gang crimes closely linked to illicit narcotic substance abuse. He elaborated that this amendment would be submitted to Parliament within the next two weeks.

The President praised the support received by the Government from the public in its efforts to find permanent solutions to key issues such as illicit narcotics and gang crimes.
