President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the need for dedicated efforts to promote sports and provide training for Maldivian athletes across various disciplines, acknowledging the invaluable contribution of youth to society.
Speaking at the Republic Day celebrations at Dharubaaruge on Sunday evening, the President highlighted several initiatives launched by his government to empower the youth. He revealed that the Maldivian Youth Advisory Committee was established this year to involve young people in the country's decision-making processes. Additionally, the Government has rolled out targeted youth empowerment programmes, with 3,470 youths participating in 71 such initiatives.
The President stressed that sports is a key pillar in building a healthy society and that special efforts must be made to promote sports and develop the skills of Maldivian athletes. He recognised that sports had been neglected in recent years but noted that significant progress has been made this year in revitalising the sporting spirit. The Government has provided substantial support to sports associations and is working on enhancing sports facilities in both Malé and the Atolls.
The results of these efforts are becoming evident, the President said, with local athletes having represented the country in 75 international sports events so far this year. He also proudly announced that Maldivian athletes have won 12 medals.
