President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasises that every citizen bears responsibility for fostering mutual respect towards protecting the honour and dignity of others. He made the remarks while speaking at the official ceremony to mark National Unity Day 2023.

Reflecting on the enduring attributes of unity among Maldivians, President Dr Muizzu voiced his aspiration for Maldivians to reclaim and reinforce the unity that has diminished over time. In this regard, the President expressed that he envisions the Maldives reestablishing and revitalising the dwindling aspects of familial relationships, friendships, and fraternal connections, safeguarding honour and dignity while fostering enduring compassion and empathy.

Recalling these friendly gestures, President Dr Muizzu reminisced about the communal practices of sharing clothes, feeding the neighbours, and sweeping the neighbour's outdoor space. He highlighted the restart of the halted education system and the loss of electricity, which the President described as concerted efforts through an Islamic and nationalistic approach.

The National Unity Day, observed annually on December 26, commemorates the unity and solidarity demonstrated by citizens following the catastrophic 2004 tsunami.
