President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday evening met with the members of the Island Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Maafushi Island in the Kaafu Atoll, where the council members shed light on the most pertinent issues and developmental needs of the residents. The meeting was held in the Secretariat of the Maafushi Island Council as part of the President’s one-day visit to the island.
Some of the issues raised by the council members included the need for proper waste management, solutions for beach erosion, staff shortages and upgrading the council secretariat, and proper management of mosques. The members also discussed with the President concerns related to the harbour extension project and the development of additional classrooms at the school. Members of the WDC spoke about the need for the administration’s assistance in seeking financial aid and shared their concerns, including the need for a volleyball court and futsal ground dedicated to women.
Speaking at the meeting, President Solih shared the latest updates on the planned development projects and assured the members that he would speak with relevant ministries to find suitable solutions to the concerns raised at the meeting.
Earlier in the afternoon, President Solih visited the Maafushi Prison and met with senior officials of Maldives Correctional Services and inquired about the efforts to improve the conditions at the penitentiary. He also had the opportunity to see some of the handicraft work of the inmates.
Today, President Solih also inaugurated the new football grounds and watched part of a game between teams from Male and Maafushi. He also visited the Maafushi Health Centre and inquired about its services. A high-level delegation, including cabinet ministers and senior government officials, accompanied the President on the visit to Maafushi Island.
