Vice President Faisal Naseem has urged the public to remain unified in the face of adversity and to always prioritise kindness and harmony. He made this statement while speaking at the special ceremony held tonight at Gaafu Alifu Villingili Island, to celebrate National Unity Day.
In his remarks at the ceremony, the Vice President encouraged the public to remember the victims of the 2004 tsunami disaster and their families in their prayers. He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant strength and courage to the affected families, praising the people for the determination and empathy displayed following the disaster 15 years ago. Continuing in this vein, he stated that we should continue to embody the morals and principles prescribed by Islam and work in solidarity towards national development.
Expounding on the importance afforded to freedom of speech in the country, he affirmed the importance of exchanging contrasting opinions for the sum benefit of society, the economy and the nation. He called on the public to engage in lively discourse without resorting to hatred or violence.
He said that the same held true for the Maldives' battle against Covid-19, stating that the entire country had come together to protect our nation from the pandemic. He commended all healthcare and frontline workers who continue to strive tirelessly to prevent the spread of the virus.
Vice President Faisal Naseem also spoke on the projects undertaken by the Government to aid in economic growth and national development. He implored the public to refrain from activities that may interfere with the progress of development projects. He further reinforced the Government's commitment to providing a dignified life for all citizens and to nurture healthy and productive future generations.
The Vice President arrived at Gaafu Alifu Villingili Island earlier today, as part of his two-day trip to North Huvadu Atoll. He is joined on the trip by the Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Aishath Mohamed Didi, Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdullah, and Special Advisor on Social Policy at the President's Office, Dr Mustafa Lutfy.
The ceremony tonight included a special report detailing the devastation to the island during the 2004 tsunami and the cooperative spirits displayed by the residents following the disaster.
