President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today ratified the Fourth Amendment to the “Constitution of the Republic of Maldives”.

The amendment bill was passed by the Parliament on Tuesday, 15th April 2019, at the 11th sitting of the first session of the People’s Majlis.

Upon ratification, the Act has been published in the ‎Government Gazette.‎

As per the amendment, Article 251 (a) now states that no foreign party, shall own or be given ownership of any part of the territory of the Maldives. As per the amendment, Article 251 (b) now states that a foreign party shall not receive a lease of, or be given in any other way, any part of the territory of the Maldives for a period exceeding ninety-nine years. The amendment also repealed chapter 15 of the Constitution.
