President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on citizens to be more environmentally conscious, and do their part in ensuring that the Maldives’ always retains its ‘Jazeera’ (Islanders) lifestyle. He made this remark while speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of Hulhumalé phase 2, water and sanitation system.
Speaking at the event the President highlighted some of the measures that are being undertaken to ensure that citizens living in Hulhumale’ will have access to safe and affordable drinking water. He also appealed to use renewable energy while making drinking water. Moreover, he suggested to store rain water safely as its more environmental friendly method.
The President stated that water provided to households by Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is of extremely high quality and that the tap water they provide is safe to drink. By drinking tap water instead of buying plastic bottles – and by taking other environmentally conscious measures, such as collecting rain water – citizens can not only save on water-related expenditure but can be a part of the solution with regard to reducing plastic usage.
As he expressed during his inaugural address the President is committed to ensuring that all islands are provided with basic services and amenities irrespective of their population size. Accordingly, he assured citizens that as work begins of phase 2 of Hulhumale’ and as more people move to live there, they would have access to safe and affordable drinking water.
