President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that this government would work by giving Maldives Police Service, the total freedom within the constitution to instill peace and harmony in the society and assured the public that the government won’t allow Maldives Police to be politically influenced at any cost. He made this statement at the ceremony held this evening at Dharubaaruge to commemorate the 86th anniversary of Maldives Police Service.

Speaking at the ceremony President Solih stated that all the Police Officers should set a common goal to gain the trust of the public while bringing a smile to their faces whenever they are encountered. Highlighting that peace and harmony within the society is key to rapid development, the President stated that the Police should work steadfastly on bringing peace and harmony to the society.

He further stated that since any country’s internal peace is dependent of the truthfulness and loyalty of the police force, it is the hope of the government that the police force at all times would follow the rules and regulations and serve the nation with their utmost excellence.

During the ceremony, the President shed light on the work carried out by the government from the first day of this administration to remedy the Police institution and noted with gratitude that all the key targets to be achieved at the end of the Government’s initial hundred working days have been successfully achieved.

Moreover, President Solih noted that one of the most important components is the successful conduction of the Police Reform Symposium held during last week. In addition, he also pointed out the introduction of environment police, and strengthening of general police services and traffic policing.

Speaking in this regard, the President said that the 5-year Police Strategic Plan has been formulated based on the information acquired during the Police Reform Symposium and that 5 key areas have been identified for immediate improvement.

The President stated that in the Police Strategic plan as well, the highest priority is accorded to restoring the public trust and confidence in the institution. He said that once this milestone is achieved, the crime rate will lower and in turn that the police will find it easier to enforce the laws.

Further, the President said that the police was the first line of attendees the public meets during a crisis. He said called upon all police officers to demonstrated compassion and sociability towards the community, and to always put forth professionalism when dealing with the public.
