President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has ratified the First and Second Amendments to the Presidential Elections Act (Act no. 12/2008). The bill was passed by the Parliament on Wednesday, 4 July 2018, at the seventh sitting of the Second Session of the Parliament.
The Amendments were made to Articles 7, and 9 of the Act. In this regard, a provision was added to subsection (b) of Article 7. Further, amendments were made to subsection (b) of Article 9.
Upon ratification of this Act, the following will come into effect:
•    According to the constitution, a presidential candidate must be a Maldivian citizen born to Maldivian parents. In the event that the individual has held the citizenship of a foreign country, he would be able to compete in the presidential elections after 10 years of renouncing the foreign citizenship.
•    The administrative fee of application for presidential candidature is MVR 100,000.00 (one hundred thousand).
Upon ratification, the Acts have been published in the Government Gazette today.
