President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has met and congratulated the president of the Cricket Board of Maldives Mohamed Aflah, for his election to the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the Regional Representative Member for Asia. The meeting was held at the President’s Office this afternoon.

During the meeting, the President noted that the victory came at the first time of participation, and stated that this achievement was gained as a result of the experience and integrity of Mohamed Aflah.

Highlighting the current level of Maldivian football in the region, the President expressed his hopes that the country’s cricket too would reach higher levels. In this regard the President spoke on the importance of training more youth in the sport.

Noting that teams from the South Asia Region were strong competitors at international competitions, the President conveyed his hopes for the Maldives to win a regional cricket championship. He also expressed his confidence that Mohamed Aflah would put in every effort for the development of cricket in the Maldives during his term on the International Cricket Council, and noted the importance of bringing in sports scholarships for cricketers.

Further, the President reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving the country’s level in international cricket; especially highlighting its contribution to the infrastructure development.

At the meeting, the President of the Cricket Board of Maldives expressed his gratitude to President Yameen for the assistance and support towards the development of the sport. He also assured of his commitment to the cause, as a board member of the ICC.

At today’s meeting the President was accompanied by Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Iruthisham Adam, Senior Policy Executive at the Ministry of Education Mr. Ibrahim Ismail Ali and Chief Communications Strategist at the President’s Office, Mr. Ibrahim Imjad Jaleel.
