President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has stated that the battle to keep influential colonial powers at bay, now emerges and is being fuelled within the Maldives.
President Yameen, in his address to the nation on the occasion of Maldives’ 52nd Independence Day noted that today we see politicians pursuing their own interests, instigating violence and encouraging other countries, societies and organisations to interfere in our internal affairs, all under the guise of citizen’s rights.
President further noted that, he takes his main responsibility as per the mandate given to him by the people of Maldives that of combating the age old problems yet unsolved by the previous administrations, and secure a better future for the youth and children of this nation. He stated that combating efforts to propagate religious beliefs other than Islam and to ensure that Maldives remains as a 100% Muslim nation whilst preventing apostasy amongst the youth. He further stated that ensuring safety of lives of the people and their property, combatting drug and related offences and enhancing the system of children and women’s protection will take priority over responding to political allegations. President noted that repaying the government debt and stabilising the weakened economy to create more job opportunities will be the fundamental focus of his government.
