President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that his Administration is the first in the Maldives to govern with clearly established systems and procedures. The President made this remark while speaking at a function organised by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The President highlighted that the recent Local Council elections, met with the approval of a number of foreign observers, was the most fair elections held in the Maldives to date.

The President also stated that the government coalition should take lessons from the recent elections, commenting that low voter turnout indicates a lack of faith in councils to deliver development.

Furthermore, the President called upon all councils, including those dominated by the opposition members, not to be a barrier to development projects. He further stated that he would not let the lack of support by Councils hinder national development.

President Yameen assured all Maldivians that his Administration would not interfere with any independent institution and that the Administration will work within the constitutional framework.
