The Non-resident Ambassador of Portugal, His Excellency Joao do Carmo Ataide da Camara presented his Letter of Credence to the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning, at the President’s Office.

At the ceremony, the President welcomed the Ambassador to the Maldives and congratulated him on the commencement of his term.

During the call, the President conveyed the greetings and good wishes to the President of Portugal and highlighted the high importance the Maldives attaches to the relations between the two countries.
The discussions that followed included the economic transformation agenda pursued by the Government of Maldives. The President expressed the firm belief of the Government to expedite economic progress through the integration and development of broad-based, private sector investments. The President also noted that foreign investments are imperative for economic growth, private sector development and greater wealth creation. In this regard, the President expressed hope that the Portuguese private sector would seek investment opportunities in the Maldives, especially in the tourism industry of the Maldives.

The Ambassador conveyed greetings and good wishes from the President of Portugal and expressed gratitude for receiving him as the Non-resident Ambassador of Portugal to the Maldives. The Ambassador also emphasised on enhancing the relations between the two countries. In this regard, the Ambassador stated that the Maldives and Portugal share common views internationally and that different areas of cooperation between the two countries would be explored in the years to come.

The President was accompanied at the call by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Dr. Mohamed Asim, and the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
