President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, while addressing the inauguration of clean water services at Meemu Atoll Mulah Island this afternoon, stated that the country was embarking on a new vision with new objectives; towards a new Maldives. In this light the President stated that his administration’s goal was to renew and refine the existing services provided throughout the country.

In his speech, the President noted that during the past three years his administration had created more jobs for youth than at any other time in the Maldives’ history. He went on to note that the main motivation for fostering a modern democracy in Maldives was to help the citizenry realize that they are active shareholders of national development. The President also stated that citizens will become shareholders only when they reap the benefit of the progress of the nation’s welfare.

Touching on the country’s economic front, the President highlighted that the reason for taking on large loans to carry out mega projects in the country was to enable future generations to reap more benefits in the coming days — with calculated risk comes greater benefit and if we limit development to means within our current resources we cannot realize the development speed required, he said.

While speaking at the ceremony, the President also touched on the importance of caring for one another and of respecting each other, adding that we can instill peace and harmony in our society by following true Islamic values.

During his speech, the President reassured the nation that he would not interfere with the Maldivian Judiciary and that his administration would give space for the judicial system to carry out their work independently within the bounds of the constitution.

The President was accompanied by Minister of Environment and Energy Honourable Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and the Vice President of PPM, and Parliament Member of Fonadhoo Constituency, Honourable Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
