The non-resident Ambassador of Germany, His Excellency Mr. Jörn Rhode presented his Letter of Credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning, at the President’s Office.
At the ceremony, the President welcomed Ambassador Rhode to the Maldives and congratulated the Ambassador on the commencement of his term. The President also expressed that the Ambassadors tenure will pave the way for closer Maldives-Germany relations.
During the call, the President noted with gratitude, of the long history of relations between the Maldives and Germany as this year marked the 50th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relation between the two countries. In addition, the President stated that the Maldives attaches high importance to its relations with Germany and conveyed sincere appreciation for the continued support and cooperation between the two countries.
Congratulating Germany on its ratification of the ‘Paris Agreement’, the President gave the assurance of working closely with the Government of Germany in its efforts for climate change mitigation and advocacy. Furthermore, the President expressed hope in working diligently with on counter-terrorism measures as the Maldives has taken the issue of terrorism with utmost seriousness. In this regard, the President stated that the Maldives has enacted the necessary legislation in order to address this issue domestically, as well as on individuals seeking to travel abroad and engage with terrorist groups.
The Ambassador conveyed his gratitude for receiving him and expressed hope and confidence in the continued support and engagement between the Maldives and Germany in the future. The Ambassador also expressed the desire to elevate the existing trade and commercial relations between the two countries.
The President was accompanied at the call by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Dr. Mohamed Asim, and the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E Mohamed Naseer.
