Today, President Nasheed visited Nolhivaram, Hirimaradhoo and Finey of Haa Dhaalu atoll and met with the people of the islands.
The President gave an update of developmental projects and briefed on planned projects for the islands.
Speaking on the progress in fulfilling government’s pledges, he noted the achievements in establishing a nation-wise transport system and added the government could complete the programme well before the estimated period. President Nasheed also expressed satisfaction over the progress in the health and education sectors and establishing a social protection system in the country.
The President repeated his messages to the people on the importance of decentralisation and local governance for development.
Local councils, which are to be elected in February, he said, would be an important impetus for greater public participation in government decision-making.
Later in the day, the President visited Dhidhdhoo of Haa Alif. The President is scheduled to visit more islands in his current tour the northern atolls.
