President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have attended the ceremonial flag-hoisting held on the occasion of this year’s Independence Day. The ceremony was held at the Republic Square, at 0000hrs early Tuesday morning.
Upon their arrival at the Republic Square, the President and the First Lady were received by Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Zuhoor.
Addressing the nation at tonight’s function, the President noted that independence and freedom does not translate to recklessness of individual actions – that when a nation’s laws and societal harmony is disrupted it would soon face economic challenges, regardless of previous advances.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad, during the function, led a special prayer on the occasion of Independence Day.
Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed & Madam Ilham Hussain, Vice President Abdulla Jihad, Speaker of the Parliament Hon. Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, Chief Justice Uz. Abdulla Saeed, Cabinet Ministers, and members of the Parliament also attended the function.
