The Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for South East Asia, Dr. Poonam Kethrapal Singh has paid a courtesy call on Vice President Abdulla Jihad. The meeting was held this morning, at Bandos Island Resort.

During the call, the Vice President expressed sincere gratitude for the invaluable assistances and technical expertise provided by WHO during the 51 years of establishing an office in Maldives. As today marks a milestone achievement; elimination of lymphatic filariasis in the Maldives, the Vice President stated the importance given by the Government of Maldives in the development of the health sector.

The Regional Director also conveyed warm congratulations for this achievement and expressed the need for advocacy in preventing and raising awareness of non-communicable diseases in the Maldives.

The Vice President was accompanied at the meeting by the Minister of Health, Hon. Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim and Under Secretary at the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Naseer. The Regional Director was accompanied by the Resident Representative of WHO, Dr. Arvind Mathur.
