Following deliberations at the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) today, the body has decided not to place Maldives on its agenda.
During a press conference held this evening at the President’s Office, Minister for Legal Affairs at the President’s Office Uza. Aishath Azima Shakoor, speaking on behalf of the Government, stated that CMAG had recognised that the Maldives had come a long way in addressing the body’s initial concerns. She also said that representatives of the Maldivian Government who attended today’s CMAG meeting had briefed the body on the Maldives’ current political climate, and underscored the priority accorded by the Government towards ensuring economic development and peace & harmony in the country.
Uza. Azima Shakoor further noted that CMAG’s statement stressed the importance of all actors, including the opposition as well as the Government, engaging constructively in political dialogue. She also stated that the Government welcomes CMAG’s decision.
Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee, who is leading the Government at the all-party talks, once again urged all parties to come together in the talks; stating that the delegation from the United Nations Department of Political Affairs was assisting in laying the groundwork to move towards meaningful engagement.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Aishath Shiham stated that President Yameen’s direction towards prioritising national progress was at the forefront of the efforts to build capacity and engage with all stakeholders.
Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed also participated in the press conference.
The Government of Maldives was represented at today's meeting of the CMAG by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon, and Attorney General, Uz. Mohamed Anil.
