President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that more than 1/5 of the population will be sheltered when the 15,000 housing unit are completed as part of the second phase of the Hulhumalé housing project. He said this while speaking at a ceremony held tonight at Jumhoory Maidhaan to launch the housing project.
The President highlighted that this launch was a ray of hope that would solve several social issues. He underscored that the housing project was specifically designed while taking into account the most relevant age groups and therefore was highly targeted towards the Maldivian youth population who are married or about to get married.
Speaking at the function, the President noted that a new round of the project will begin before the completion of these 15,000 housing units — targeted towards those still in need of housing. He further stated that the opportunity to apply for these housing units was open to any Maldivian from anywhere in the Maldives.
In his speech, President Yameen stated that each country should have the freedom to resolve its internal affairs on its own and that Maldives does not welcome undue external interference.
At tonight’s ceremony, President Yameen launched the new loan scheme for housing to be undertaken with the Housing Development Finance Corporation, and took photos with the awardees of the Islamic loan facility for housing.
During the ceremony held at Jumhooree Maidhaan, Managing Director of Apex Realty Pvt Ltd Mr Brotain Banerjee, handed over the flats built at old Arabia School and ‘Gaa Koshi’ area. Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, accepted the flats on behalf of the government. Furthermore, six agreements were signed, related to phase 2 of the Hulhumalé housing project.
Along with the President, First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Cabinet Ministers, Members of the People’s Majlis and senior officials of the Government participated in the ceremony.
