President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi held high level discussions at Hyderabad House this Monday afternoon.
The President and the Prime Minister held one-to-one discussion on broad range of issues before convening for a working lunch with delegates from both countries.
The President extended condolence to the Indian Prime Minister in person, for the deaths and injuries that occurred due to the explosion during the Hindu New Year celebrations at the Puttingal Temple in Kerala.
In the course of this luncheon dialogue was held to provide greater cooperation in border security, cyber security and economic cooperation. Discussions also touched on the prisoner transfer agreement between the two nations which is to be implemented as soon as formalities are done. The delegation held further discussions on strengthening the existing ties between both countries and shed light on other areas of mutual concern.
Speaking at the meeting, the President expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister of India for the support they provide Maldives in the international arena. In addition to this, the President emphasised that the close relationship between the two countries had the resilience and the depth to overcome any challenges that it may face and stated that the Maldives appreciated the significant role India continues to play in making SAARC a success. He also said that India’s leadership role in the international arena is exemplary and an inspiration for the Maldives.
While the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment towards continued assistance in the health sector he also said that India could learn from Maldives in terms of fisheries sector development.
During the discussions President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom formally invited the Indian Prime Minister His Excellency Mr. Narendra Modi to visit the Maldives in the near future.
The Maldivian delegation during the Presidents official visit comprises of Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee, High Commissioner to India Mr. Ahmed Mohamed and Under Secretary at the Presidents’ Office Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
