President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that small island nations face environmental issues the most. The President stated this while addressing the attendees of the inaugural function of sewerage system and conclusion of the Beach Protection Project of Holhudhoo in South Miladhummadulu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that environmental issues can be tackled by finding financial aid required for the work that needs to be done to solve them. Also, the President stated that environmental issues that take place due to climate change can be solved with the help of technology.

At the function the President further stated that the difficulties faced by Holhudhoo citizens in attaining clean drinking water will be solved soon, because a Reverse Osmosis Plant that purifies salt water will be installed in the island within this year. The President also stated that in order to enhance the education in Holhudhoo, six additional classrooms will be built in Meynaa School located in Holhudhoo.

The President highlighted it was during last year that the service of providing electricity to all islands for twenty four hours began for the first time in the Maldives. The President also said that, when considering the different developmental projects that are being carried in the islands, it is notable that the most number of projects are to develop the sewerage and water system in the islands.

While addressing the attendees, the President stated that two third of the Maldivian population was youth. Hence, it is vital to provide opportunities for education and youth development. The President also highlighted that a harmonious society is a society with peace, and a harmonious society can be observed when the youth stay away from crime by being actively involved in things like sports. Along similar lines, the President stated that a key goal of the Administration was to promote sports for the satisfaction of the youth, so there are various things that are being done to promote sports in the islands.

At this ceremony, the President was awarded with honorary plaques by Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The honorary plaque from MWSC was presented to the President by Managing Director of MWSC, Mr. Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed. The honorary plaque from MTCC was presented to the President by Chief Executive Officer of MTCC, Mr. Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem.

The President was accompanied at the function by Minister of Environment and Energy, Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, Member of Parliament representing Holhudhoo, Mr. Ali Mohamed and senior officials of MWSC and MTCC.
