President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Government’s philosophy is for the Maldives to be ruled by a people’s Government. The President made this remark while speaking at a rally held this evening, by the Progressive Party of Maldives. He said that the Maldives’ Government must be based on a democratic system accepted by the people.
In his speech, the President noted that his Government focused on restoring for the people, the fundamental rights that had been diminished over the past years. He also said that it was the Government’s aim to bring to the Maldivian people happiness and prosperity, and to establish peace and harmony in the Maldivian nation. Continuing in this regard, the President underscored that it should always be the Government that possesses the power and rights in deciding the nation’s affairs.
“We cannot accept judges being kidnapped. We cannot accept political leaders being removed from the system. We cannot accept always being on the streets, while in power or as the opposition. We do not accept freedom of religion in Maldives. We believe in the happiness and contentment, and peace and harmony of the Maldivian people.”
Speaking at the function held this evening, the President noted that some senior officials of this Government have removed themselves from office, or have been dismissed from their positions. He also pointed out that some of these former officials have been brought before the law. The President underlined that this was due to their own choice of actions. Speaking in this regard, the President assured that he would never stand in the way of justice for any individual. He pointed out that it was in the hands of the accused to be acquitted.
Describing the Maldivian youth as the driving force of the country, President Yameen said that we will not be able to attain economic or social harmony without the input of the youth. In this regard, the President highlighted the steps being taken by the Government towards youth empowerment. The President also spoke on the efforts being put in by the Government to ensure the rights of women.
