President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has discussed ways to further reinforce and strengthen the existing diplomatic and political relations between both countries with Foreign Secretary and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The President had this discussion during a courtesy call made by the Indian Foreign Secretary at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon.
During this meeting, the President and the Indian Foreign Secretary highlighted the existing bilateral relationship between both countries and discussed that areas be further explored in order to enhance the good working relationship between the Maldives and India. In this regard, the President and the Indian Foreign Secretary spoke of supporting each other in the International Arena and in times of political distress. Further discussions were held regarding cross-border terrorism, health care and economic development in the Maldives. During this meeting the Indian Foreign Secretary re-assured the President of India’s continued support.
Speaking at the meeting, President Yameen gave his assurance to the Indian Foreign Secretary of his government’s commitment towards upholding and maintaining the bilateral and political relationship between the two countries. The President also briefed the Indian Foreign Minister on the current political landscape of the country, while also touching on social issues. The President went on to express his appreciation for India’s support of the Maldives in the international arena.
The President was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Dunya Maumoon, Foreign Secretary of Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and Under Secretary at the President’s Office Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
