Head Imam of Masjid al Aqsa in Palestine, Ali Umar Yaqoub Abbasi has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on Thursday morning.
At the meeting, the President expressed his happiness due to the visit by the Head Imam and welcomed him to Maldives. The President highlighted the close relations between the Maldives and Palestine. He also expressed his hopes for further strengthening the close ties between the two countries, especially in promoting Islam. Additionally the President acclaimed that he would pray for the wellbeing, and freedom of all Palestinians.
Speaking at the meeting, the Head Imam of Masjid al Aqsa stated that it was important to respect all Mazhabs and commended President Yameen for his efforts in maintaining a moderate Islam in the Maldives. He also pointed to the fact that Maldives had always been extremely helpful towards Palestinians and thanked the President for his contributions.
The President was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad, Under Secretary at the President’s Office Mohamed Naseer and Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs Mr Mohamed Musthafa Ibrahim.
