President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has shared with the people, his dreams for the nation. The President highlighted his national aspirations while addressing the Maldivian people at the official function held today to mark this year’s National Day.
In his speech, the President said that it was his dream to see the Maldives achieve its full developmental potential by utilizing its resources, and making its voice heard in the international arena. He also voiced his dream for the call for prayer to always be heard in the beautiful islands of the Maldives five times a day. He further said that it was his dream to see the Maldivian people continue to live in peace and harmony under the protection of the Maldivian flag, walking the streets independently.
Speaking at the function today, the President emphasized that small states, such as the Maldives, do not face traditional security challenges, nor wars of concept or ideology, but rather, face the repercussions of the economic agendas of more powerful states.
Within this context, President Yameen stressed that this was one of the main reasons why the Government accords a high priority to strengthening the country’s economy. He asserted that preserving the sovereignty of the state, while protecting outside influences, meant that we the Maldivian people would need to become economically self-sufficient.
Highlighting the importance of self-discipline, President Yameen stated that, regardless of how self-sufficient or how well educated one was, if one puts forth one’s own interests before that of the State or the people, it shows the weaknesses in his discipline; and flaws in his character. Speaking in this regard, the President said that all the social challenges we are ailed with today are caused by a failure to be self-disciplined.
