The new Ambassador of Netherlands H.E. Joanne Doornewaard has presented her credentials to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on Thursday morning.

At a ceremony held at the President’s Office to present the credentials, President Yameen congratulated Ambassador Doornewaard on the commencement of her term. The Dutch Ambassador thanked President Yameen for accepting her appointment as the Dutch representative, and said that it was a privilege to be assigned to the Maldives.

Meeting the new Ambassador afterwards, the President highlighted the areas to be addressed in order to foster a good working relationship between the Maldives and Netherlands. Discussions were especially focused on strengthening cooperation in the areas of economic development, foreign investment, and environment and energy.

President Yameen and Ambassador Doornewaard discussed global issues of mutual interest, and especially focused on the issues of human rights, environment problems and possible solutions. The President and the Ambassador shared their experiences and challenges faced in adapting to renewable energy. President Yameen pointed out that a fully solar powered resort being operated in the Maldives shows our commitment to adapting to clean energy.

Speaking at the meeting, President Yameen and Ambassador Doornewaard assured their continuous support to each other in the international arena.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon, and Undersecretary at the President’s Office, Mohamed Naseer.
